Can Someone Change the School Day to a Later Start Time? Thanks.
The teacher who never can wake up early for work.
Hi, that’s me. That’s my problem. I can’t get up early.
I’ve been this way since I was a kid. The bus driver would literally wait for me at the bus stop because he knew I would be running after the bus if he didn’t. (The enabling started early.)
Tell me why then of all the careers to choose from, I chose to be a teacher. The one job YOU HAVE TO be on time for.
That’s why I made the sticker: “Running Late is my Cardio”.
When you race down the hallway in a sweat and then try to walk in like you haven’t just run a 5K from your car, you understand this sticker.
Ugh! Nothing is worse than strolling into a morning faculty meeting and all your staff is staring at you walking in.
Honestly, what always got me was, what face I should make when I’m doing my “Late Walk of Shame”?
My preferred look was usually the “no eye contact aloof look”.
I always felt a sigh of relief when I saw a teacher come in after me (usually with a Starbucks coffee in the hand).
In my mind I thought “at least I wasn’t as late as Ms. Smith”.
She was the real MVP.
The work day should start later.
Not just for the teacher’s sake, but for the students as well.
I’m sure there are all sorts of articles like the one from the American Academy of Pediatrics on how students should start school later to improve academic success,
but I will not bore you with those.
Just know there are studies that prove not only teachers, but students need to be starting class no earlier than 8:30am.
With more people working from home, this idea seems plausible now more than ever.
Yes, there are some jobs that must start early, but most jobs now can start later.
People in the workforce have more negotiating power than they ever did before.
Working from home has provided more flexibility for people with children to take them to school later.
What about the Early Riser?
Ah yes, my early birds. Think of all the fun activities or errands you can get done before work. For you this is prime time to get things done.
Everyone wins.
So, to all my late teachers reading this,
go order my sticker and place it where everyone can see.
Own it!
We all know you’re not going to change. (I know I'm not going to.)
And to you, my early morning enthusiasts,
show some love to that teacher strolling in after their kids walk in to class
(yes, that also was me a few times)
and order them this funny sticker.
They will laugh, and love it . . . eventually.
